Circular chains work differently from conventional chain knockers. Instead of chains that swing outward and strike the pipe wall, the circular chain has a fixed diameter and contacts the full pipe circumference at once. More of the cutting surface is touching the pipe wall at any given moment, which is what makes it faster at descaling than a regular chain knocker. If you need to remove limescale, urine scale, cement residue, or tile grout from PVC pipes, this is the more efficient tool for that job. It also handles root intrusion well.
As a general rule, for DN50 (2″) and smaller PVC pipes a plain chain handles both descaling and blockage removal well enough that a circular chain is rarely needed. Where the circular chain earns its place is DN75 (3″) and above, particularly when the scale is heavy or stubborn. For light deposits a plain chain will get there eventually, but the more buildup there is, the more the full-circumference contact of the circular chain makes a noticeable difference in how long the job takes.
Because the chain works over the full inner circumference rather than delivering individual blows, it is also a gentler option for older or slightly deteriorated pipe where concentrated force in one spot is something you want to avoid.
This chain has no hard metal tips, which keeps it safe for PVC (ABS). If you are working in metal or ceramic pipes, the Circular Chain with Hard Metal Tips is the right version instead. One thing to keep in mind when running this chain: speed matters. At higher RPM the chain self-centers properly due to centrifugal force and cleans evenly. Drop the speed too low and it starts bouncing around inside the pipe instead of sitting against the wall. Keep the RPM up for consistent results.
It is a descaling tool first. For solid blockages, clear the pipe first with a drill-headed chain, then follow with the circular chain to clean the walls. You can also attach a separate drill head in front of the circular chain if needed. It is also commonly used before relining since a clean pipe wall makes a real difference in how well the liner bonds.
Covers DN50 (2″) through DN200 (8″), for 8mm (⁵⁄₁₆″), 10mm (⅜″), and 12mm (½″) shafts.
