Like all plain chains, the heavy version has no carbide tips and is built for PVC. If you need a chain for metal or ceramic pipes, the X-Tip Chain (Heavy) or Croco Chain (Heavy) are the right tools instead.
The heavy version uses 4mm stainless steel chain links and always comes as a 3-chain set. The thicker links handle more torque, which makes this chain the natural fit when you're running a 10mm (⅜″) or 12mm (½″) shaft. It's also available on 8mm (⁵⁄₁₆″) shafts, though if you already have a high-torque machine, the heavier chain makes better use of the power available. Lighter chain on the same machine works too, but it's undershooting what the setup can do.
Pipe sizes covered are DN75 (3″) through DN200 (8″). If you're working in DN50 (2″) or smaller, the Plain Chain (Light) is the one to use. The working diameter is adjustable the same way as the other two hub chain knockers: loosen the hex screws on either hub, slide it to change how wide the chains reach, then tighten again.
This chain is primarily for blockage removal in PVC: grease, roots, and general buildup. You can use it for descaling too, but a circular chain will do that faster since it contacts the full pipe circumference at once. For solid obstructions that stall the chain, the drill-headed version opens a path first before the chains clean behind it.
